An excerpt from Words On Water, A Ferryman’s Journal, Washington Island, Wisconsin, by Richard Purinton
“I live on Washington Island, Wisconsin, off the tip of the Door Peninsula. The island is surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay to the west. This island seems a mystery to many, including myself some days. How people find Washington Island, or how it finds them, must be as varied as the people themselves. What moves people to live on or visit this island? Some arrive for recreation and never care to leave. They plan and even scheme for the day when they retire or change jobs, for the day fate will intervene and present them with an opportunity to live here or visit more frequently. Marriage and divorce can also be great motivators. In my case, it was marriage to an Island girl, and her shared interest in returning to Wisconsin to live and raise our one-year-old son.”
